Custom design- What am I getting?

I have been toying around with a blog I am creating and purchased the custom design upgrade. I know ZERO CSS, but that’s OK. I have been looking at tons of forums leading up to the upgrade and they have all been for wordpress.ORG.

What exactly does the upgrade allow me to do? Color, font style, size. What else? I’m really interested in changing things like the size of those huge header images in some of the themes, erasing post dates, and things like that. Are these things possible?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can change a variety of things about your site with the CSS upgrade including the size of things, position of things, you can hide them, change fonts, colours etc. So yes, what you’re looking for can be done.

But since a picture paints a thousand words, have a look at these posts on the WP.com blog as they showcase a variety of themes and how different authors have made them look completely different with the CSS upgrade:

In some cases erasing the date erases the comment count and all kinds of other things. The CSS upgrade gets you the ability to edit the CSS and make changes to the look, but not the functionality, of your site. It also gets you some staff help, but there can be a few days’ turnaround time on that.

@waxbuckets, if you haven’t already, you may wish to look through this Custom Design support document which outlines the basics of what is included in Custom Design.

Removing dates, changing the size of header images and things like that are all doable with CSS – and a lot more. As @raincoaster said though, sometimes certain things are not possible, or are more difficult in some themes. All themes are different.

CSS is a lot of fun though.

I would also suggest getting acquainted with the web inspector in your browser, which is a very good tool when it comes to working on CSS. We have a set of brief screencasts on How to Find Your Theme’s CSS that will get you started.
