Custom DNS and MX record confusion!

    Hi, yesterday I mapped my domain gemgraphic.co.uk to WordPress. I have two email addresses which use the domain and so have to change my dns. My registrar is Fasthost.co.uk and when I ask for info to sort out my email addresses the only information they give me is to point the mx record to 213.171.216.114 . This does not fit in with the information you request to update dns. I have sent Fasthost a link and a screeshoot of your DNS support pages to show info required and got the following information in reply;
    “You can add it this way. On your MX record section, you can add mailsever.gemgraphics.co.uk with priority 10. You also need to create an A record with mailserver as the hostname then your points to record will be pointed to 213.171.216.114.” I assume I do this at the WordPress end not at Fasthost?
    Another concern I have is that my old website is still showing at gemgraphics.co.uk – I thought it would show my new WordPress website instead. I realise mapping can take a day or two and I only starting the mapping at 6.15pm gmt last night – do I need to be patient or is there something else I need to do to show my wordpress website at http://www.gemgraphics.co.uk?
    Grateful for any help to resolve this soon, thanks, Charlotte
    PLEASE NOTE: I have changed my contact email address on this correspondence as (email visible only to moderators and staff) is not available a the moment.

    Hi, just an update. Since my last message I have managed to update my Custom dns records. The following was validated and saved;

    CNAME autodiscover mailserver.gemgraphics.co.uk.
    MX 10 mailserver.gemgraphics.co.uk.
    A mailserver 213.171.216.114

    I believe I have to wait 24hrs for updating? And this will get my domain email addresses back in working order?
    Thanks, Charlotte

    Yay, my new WordPress website is now showing as http://www.gemgraphics.co.uk !
    I should just be patient :-)

  • Hi Charlotte – Fantastic! Yes, it can take some time for changes to DNS to resolve. I’m glad you’re set now – let us know if you need anything else. :)
