Custom DNS records for Fatcow

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I’ve tried to figure this out for myself but I’m making very little progress. I’ve managed to map my domain from Fatcow to WordPress but I’m having some problems with the custom DNS mx records to allow my email to work. I contacted fatcow and they provided me with:
In order to use our email service, please make sure to add the mx record pointing to the following IP’s by contacting your current nameservers provider.
    mx 65.254.254.50
    mx 65.254.254.51
    mx 65.254.254.52
    mx 65.254.254.53
    mx 65.254.254.54
When I put this in I’m told it’s in the wrong format. Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Craig

I’ve also just tried the following, which it accepts as a format, but I’m unsure if I’m missing anything.
    A mx 65.254.254.50
    A mx 65.254.254.51
    A mx 65.254.254.52
    A mx 65.254.254.53
    A mx 65.254.254.54
    MX 30 mx.craig-warren.com.

I’m not seeing Fatcow on the list of services that work with WordPress.com, but see if any of these instructions can be adapted for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/?s=Custom+email

MX records need dns names, not IP addresses. The easiest option is to ask Fatcow for the names and add them as MS records:

    MX 5 THE.FISRST.NAME.FROM.FATCOW.COM.
    MX 5 THE.SECOND.NAME.FROM.FATCOW.COM.

Note the dot on the end.

If for some reason the server cannot give you a name you could try adding A records yourself then mapping these:

    A mail0 65.254.254.50
    A mail1 65.254.254.51
    A mail2 65.254.254.52

    MX 10 mail0.craig-warren.com.
    MX 10 mail1.craig-warren.com.
    MX 10 mail2.craig-warren.com.

Your solution of using a round-robin DNS may work too but it depends on how WordPress’s DNS servers work – you might find that it always uses the first entry.

Thanks, I’ve requested the information as names rather than IP addresses. Unfortunately I don’t understand any of this stuff, I’ve just tried to force it into a format that I found on other threads. I’ll post back their reply.

    Okay, now I’m completely lost:

“The Domain nameserver are pointing to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM, NS2.WORDPRESS.COM, NS3.WORDPRESS.COM.You can ask them to change the mx record to mx.fatcow.com.”

What does this mean? I changed the domain nameserver to the above for domain mapping.

The settings suggested by Tandava108 worked and my fatcow account does now receive email. However, my iphone can’t pick them up. Do I need to change the smtp or imap settings?

    Thanks.

    @ craigmlw,

I took a look at your MX records and I believe there may be an issue with using the mail0, mail1, and mail2 subdomains with Fatcow email hosting. You can contact Fatcow to verify if these records will work for your email setup.

Are you able to both send and receive email from your account? If so, then the mx records you have should be correct and you may need to contact Fatcow about the email issues specific to your iPhone.

If you aren’t able to send email, you may need to update your MX records. You can’t have 2 MX records with the same host, but it should work if you use the following:

    A mx 65.254.254.50
    A mx 65.254.254.51
    A mx 65.254.254.52
    MX 10 mx.craig-warren.com.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this!

    Hi Rachel.

Before I mapped the domain my email did work on my iphone. From my webmail I am able to send and receive mail. I will try the settings you’ve suggested and will get back to you.

    Thanks,
    Craig
