Custom domain

    Hello All,

I have been using WordPress self-hosted for years and have finally decided to take the plunge and move my site to wordpress.com.

The first hurdle I come across is a big one. I cannot transfer my NS or my full DNS to WordPress as I have other dependencies based on my NS (and to have a single domain outside of the management structure of all my other domains is counter intuitive).

I cannot believe that the ONLY way to leave my domain with my current provider is to do your domain mapping farce!

Can you please explain to me what you are doing that I cannot do in my naming?

Looking around on the internet it seems that your default response appears to be “we have lots of IP’s” Sure, fine, easily resolved with cnames.

I eagerly await some sense prior to cancellation of account and refund request.

  • Hi Barry,

If you don’t want to use our name servers to point your domain here, you can use our IPs instead by setting up the following A records:

    192.0.78.24
    192.0.78.25

Please note that those IPs might change in the future. If this happens, you can contact us and we’ll provide you with the new ones.

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

    Thanks.

Is there any reason you don’t just use cnames for those addresses to avoid IP address changing issues?

    This is not rocket science.

I’ve just noticed the tone of my messages is rather rude.
I apologise for this, not necessary at all.

I am still interested to know why you don’t allow for something as simple as a CNAME to allow for IP changes etc (if you aren’t doing other forms of load management…)?

  • No need to apologize :) The reason we don’t use CNAME records for domain mapping is of the way the WordPress.com grid is set up. It’s a rather complicated setup and I’m afraid I’m not qualified enough to fully explain it.

Ok, I guess I will have to carry on in the dark then :)

    Thanks

  • Hi there,

    I can answer you.

CNAMEs cannot be used to point the root, i.e. a domain itself, to a server. CNAMEs can only be used to point subdomains to either an IP address, or to another domain which has its own IP address already. This is how DNS systems work across the web.

There are a small number of hosts that do allow using CNAMEs to point the root, but they use a custom DNS setup to do that which they devised themselves, and which is not the standard protocol used on the web at large.

To point the root, you need to either point the IPs to us, or you need to give us control over the DNS completely by changing the name servers to point to us. However, using IPs should be safe – our IPs haven’t changed in years.

    Thanks Kokkieh.

    I learned something new today!

Even more than the above because in true internet outrage style, I knew I was right so I had to go and research it :)

After reading through the RFC’s learned that I don’t know as much as I thought :)
