  Hi, I would like to register a custom domain through wordpress but do I have to upgrade to premium plan first? can i use free basic plan for custom domain?

  Hi there. The premium plan includes a custom domain, but you can also buy a custom domain/domain mapping on its own. See here for details: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
