Custom Domain
-
Hello,
I’m writing to ask about custom domain. For instance, I created a blog on wordpress.com and it’s called ‘abc’, so my free blog’s web address is abc.wordpress.com. Let’s assume that I want to upgrade account on WordPress to have official web address ‘abc.com’. Is it possible that someone else could buy and took me this web address (abc.com) using other hosting provider or is this address reserved for me if I would like to upgrade my domain to more professional?Thank you in advance for reply.
MonikaThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
We have no way to reserve custom domains. Custom domains are listed in a public registry, and the only way to get one is to registered it – pay a fee to the registry that gives you ownership of the domain for one year. So, anyone on Earth is able to register “abc.com” if it’s not already taken, and should you register it and then let it expire, you stop being the owner which releases it again for anyone to buy.
While you own the domain and keep renewing it each year no one else can use it, though. A domain can only be owned by one person at a time.
