Custom domain

    Hi all,
A few days ago, I registered for a custom domain (ninstrebor.com) on wp.com however last night I cancelled it as I deleted my blog and wanted to start afresh on wp.org

I’ve now signed up to Blue Host to host my wp.org blog however when I’m logged into my Blue Host account, it looks like my custom domain is still linked to Wild West the host for wp.com I am aware that I cannot transfer domains within 60 days however I cancelled my domain within 5 days and received a full refund so why is it still locked?

  • Good Morning –

Cancelling a domain does not release it immediately to be registered elsewhere. The domain will need to work through the cancellation process. Unfortunately, there’s no way to know exactly how long this will take, but it could take up to a few weeks.

More information on domain cancellation is available here.

My recommendation is to try and recover the domain now. Otherwise, someone else could register it once it becomes available and you’ll loose ownership of it.

The domain will stay connected to your WordPress.com account until it is old enough to transfer. Until that time, you can point the domain to your new self hosted site by editing the name servers.

It sounds like you are interested in using the open source WordPress software that is available for download from WordPress.org.

Please see this link to learn about the differences:

Please let me know if you’d like me help recovering the domain, or if you’d rather wait and try to register it once it becomes available.

    Hi Liz

Thanks so much for your response. Yes I would like to recover it and point it to the new self hosted site. Could you please help me through that?

  • No problem :) I’ve sent a note to our domain partner and I’ll send you an email update once I hear back from them. This could take up to 48 hours.

Once the domain is added back to your account you’ll be able to point by editing the name servers. Here are the step-by-step instructions to do that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/change-name-servers/

Hi there! I’ve followed up with you via email about your getting your domain restored. Please check your email inbox for a message from WordPress.com. :)

    Hi Cory,

Thank you so much! Are you able to help confirm how I direct that restored domain to my new host and domain? I.e. I’d like ninstrebor.com and my new domain ninstrebor.com.au to land on same webpage which is now self hosted on WordPress.org and Blue Host.

Hello, again! Sorry for the delay. I see that you were able to point ninstrebor.com.au to Bluehost. If you’d also like to point ninstrebor.com, you’ll need to change the name servers on your WordPress.com domain to point to Bluehost as well. Here are some directions for you:

If you need more help sorting that out, let us know!
