Custom domain name: required?
-
I am thinking of upgrading a blog from free to personal, mainly in order to get rid of the ads, but I notice that an upgrade includes a custom domain name. Is that part optional? My blog has been around for a number of years, and I worry that if I change the domain name, all the persons who have visited it in the past will no longer be able to find my site with a new URL. And wouldn’t a new domain name screw up all my cross-reference links?

Hi,
On WordPress.com, you can register a custom domain (for example, yourgroovydomain.com) and use it instead of your site’s current address (such as yourgroovysite.wordpress.com). Your old address will still work, but we will automatically redirect traffic from your old address to your new one.
When upgrading to a paid plan, adding a custom domain is optional. If you choose to do so, your traffic will be redirected automatically, so you don’t have to worry :)
Here is a handy support document about domains:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/all-about-domains/You can read more about plan features here:
And pricing here:

Thanks. That’s very helpful.
One further very naive question: what are the advantages of a custom domain if I don’t have one already?

There are no naive questions :) Everyone is always learning.
I found another forum thread which answers your question about the benefits of a custom domain: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/benefits-of-custom-domain/
Let me know if you need any further support.
