Custom domain on Premium without DNS
-
Hi, I would like to map http://www.288group.com to tedallen99.wordpress.com. We have a premium upgrade and the domain has been added to the account but I do NOT want to move my DNS to WordPress.
How can I do this? A records? CNAME?
Thanks,
Alex

Hi, I’m no WordPress expert I’m afraid but I think you may have a problem. It seems that the WordPress people have decided that the leading www. on web addresses is superfluous and should be removed. Once might try setting a CNAME for the root domain 288group.com but I would not recommend it. In fact, don’t try it. It doesn’t work properly. (I did try it once. IIRC it is not supported by the DNS standards.) And unfortunately WordPress doesn’t allow using an A record.
They seem to require to you use their nameservers for DNS management – which is what you don’t want to do.
Here are some links:

Sorry not to be able to provide any better news.

Thanks gileskennedy, that’s kind of how I understand it too. I don’t think I would mind if I could just do the CNAME for 288group.com…
In a few months we will probably fire up a PHP server somewhere and host this and the other WordPress blogs we have ourselves, this would mean we do things sensibly rather than having to move all our DNS for our primary corporate domain out of our main DNS management!

Problem is that if I do a CNAME then everything, MX and all, will get forwarded… Bad news!

look at the map sub-domain – then you could have something like blog.288group.com – your name servers stay the same – add a record or two at your end

Thanks but I would like to map www rather than another subdomain.
WordPress doesn’t class www as a subdomain.
