Custom Domain & Personal Plan

    Hello
I would like to upgrade my site to the Personal Plan and add a custom domain name that I bought elsewhere (I didn’t know that wordpress also provided domain names at the time of purchase).

Anyway I bought the domain name for a term of 3 years. When I look at how to add the domain name in the Help files it mentions a transfer fee that will have to be paid every year.

‘Your domain will be renewed automatically for another year upon completion of a successful transfer. The cost of the transfer is equal to the standard renewal cost for the domain.’

Will I have to pay an additional cost for this domain name every year, even though I have paid for it for 3 years?

Also I bought the domain name on 27 March 2018 and I saw that there is a 60 day limit to register it. I was not aware of a time limit. Does this mean I cannot use the domain name I bought?

    Thank you

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You will have to pay WordPress.COM annually for a personal plan that includes domain mapping of a domain you purchased elsewhere.

    Hi dreamingonastar,

Just to add to the information @timethief has given you…

When I look at how to add the domain name in the Help files it mentions a transfer fee that will have to be paid every year.

The cost of the domain transfer will be covered by the credit included in the Personal plan. Once the domain has been transferred to WordPress.com, there won’t be any additional transfer costs to pay.

The domain itself will need to be renewed in order to remain active but as @timethief mentioned, that will be included in the Personal plan cost.

Also I bought the domain name on 27 March 2018 and I saw that there is a 60 day limit to register it.

Newly registered domains have a 60 day transfer lock, which means the domain cannot be transferred during that time — but a transfer can be initiated once those 60 days have passed. Which domain do you wish to use?

Will I have to pay an additional cost for this domain name every year, even though I have paid for it for 3 years?

Transferring a domain to WordPress.com automatically renews it for another year. After that, the domain would be renewed annually along with the Personal plan (as one cost), extending the expiry date of the domain.

I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.

Hello, thank you Timethief and Gemma for your helpful answers.
The domain I wish to use is tinadevins.com

  • @dreamingonastar, the 60 day limit you mentioned is actually just a 60 day lock, where you aren’t allowed to transfer the domain until that lock ends. And, it’s been more than 60 days so you’re okay there.

If you’d like to keep the domain registered where it is, but still use it with your plan here with us, that’s okay too. You would just map the domain instead:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

There is no pricing difference either way. Transferring the domain would just add another year to its registration.
