Custom domain pointing to WordPress page not google site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I’ve registered my custom domain and given Google all the third party domain information it needs. However, when I punch in the URL it goes to WordPress’s coming soon page (which is good because the page isn’t published) but also bad because it’s not going to the Google’s site, which is also not published. Looking at the DNS records I see two TXT entries. Do I need to remove one? Perhaps I’m missing some documentation on how to hand off the site content to Google as opposed to the WordPress page.

    Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

    Are you speaking of electjoderygoble.com?

That domain is pointing to your WordPress.com site, because the domain has our name servers and IP addresses.

If you want the domain to show a site you have hosted at Google instead, you need to change the name servers to theirs, so they manage your DNS. Then your domain will point to their IP address, and show the site you have configured with them.

Check in your Google hosting dashboard what name servers they want you to use for your site. Then you can add those to the domain on our end as explained here:

    https://wordpress.com/en/support/change-name-servers/

We’re also happy to make the change for you, if you can provide us with the name servers here.

Once you make this change, the domain should start loading your Google site within a few hours.

Let me know if you have any questions about this :)

    Correct, referring to electjoderygoble.com

I am trying to reach out to Google support has no idea what I’m asking them. They’re basically saying they do not have any ns1.something.com custom server name. I have no idea how to ask the question any differently. They said they only have a CNAME record at ghs.googlehosted.com as a DNS pointing record to a subdomain.

Does this mean there is literally no way to hook up a Google site to a domain hosted in wordpress?? This baffles me.

A quick Google search brought up this support document:

    https://support.google.com/sites/answer/9068867?hl=en#zippy=%2Cuse-a-domain-you-own-that-is-registered-elsewhere

It looks like you need to start the process on your Google site account and it should prompt you on the next steps to set that up. General Google support may not know anything about the website hosting, but they also have good documentation.

If you have trouble adding the verification code from Google as a TXT record to your domain here, just let us know!

Hi there, I think we got it sorted. A friend helped me hook up things through Google Cloud DNS service which got us the result we need. Thanks for chipping in!
