custom domain with premium plan

Hi, I set up a free wordpress website for the organization I work for not a long time ago and we’re looking into upgrading it to the premium plan but I am not sure I understand exactly everything so I have 2 questions:
– what does ‘custom domain’ mean? Is it that with the premium plan I have the option to connect it with a domain i already own? Because I also read somewhere else that you get ‘one domain credit’ or something with the premium plan so i’m a little confused, could you clarify?
– I would like to be able to make some edits on my theme through HTML and I saw you can only do so if you have the premium plan, however I’m using a free theme right now and would rather not change it, so i’m wondering if I could edit the design of it or is this option only available with premium themes?

A custom domain is a registered domain that you use to forward your WordPress.com address to, such as example.com. With the purchase of the premium plan, you do have the option to register a new domain or map an existing domain to your WordPress.com blog.

With the premium plan, you also receive the ability to edit your theme with CSS via the Custom Design feature. You can edit any theme with that feature. You actually do not have the ability to edit via CSS through the premium themes upgrade.
