Custom email instructions don’t match Google Apps

I have tried a few times to set up a custom email with a domain I mapped to WordPress.
These are the instructions I’m trying to follow, but they don’t actually match the current Google Apps verification interface:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

The instructions say: “When Google asks you to verify domain ownership, you can choose either to use a CNAME record or an HTML method. You’ll be provided with a code.”

You actually don’t get to make this choice at this point. First it asks whether you want to add a DNS record, add a meta tag, or upload an HTML file. If you try to add a DNS record, it gives you a TXT string, not a “code.” And the TXT string cannot be entered into the “verification code” field on WordPress Domains. Instead, I get an error window saying “Your Google validation string should look like this: googleffffff12345.”

Please advise. Where do I actually get the verification code to enter in WordPress domains? Or how do I do the meta tag or HTML upload?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Let staff know they’ll have to update the support documents: http://support.wordpress.com/contact

You can add a meta tag: just copy the code and put it in the spot on the Tools page for WebHooks.

The instructions are way off in the verification area.

In Google do the “meta” verification – paste that into the verification area:
Dashboard >> Tools >> Tools >> Webmaster Tools Verification >> paste in the Google box.

Then go back to Google and click on verify –

Then you should be able to take the Google MX records and paste them in – just match the format in the start “MX 10” then past the Google record in remember the period at the end of the line – repeat changing the number for each different Google record –

Then at least your MX records will be accepted – and they will start to propagate

CAUTION – while I just struggled through the above I am on the wrong side of a firewall with my host in the middle of moving a site so my check email runs through my Host & ISP (they are the same and grab the email before it really gets to the internet – and sort of goofs some things up)

But – WordPress.COM did accept and send out the MX records using the above – maybe that will help a bit until the instructions are revised –

Took a while in Google Apps, so don’t be in a hurry

    Good luck
