Custom email summary notifications

  When I started blogging 7 months ago I noticed that subscribers received brief email notifications of new posts, with a photo of my gravatar. After a few months I simply began sending out the entire post and my subscribers increased pretty dramatically. Currently I’m using the AutoFocus theme, my food blog is heavily photo oriented and I think I’d like to experiment with sending people the first paragraph of my post along with picture of my choice (usually the first picture of the post). Where do I look to figure out how to do that? I HAVE searched support and can’t find instructions. Is this a theme-related issue? Thanks.
