custom header image not large enough

Sorry, I’ll have to revise what I just said in the previous post. Entering the code in the form

    <p> </p>
    <p> </p>
    <p> </p>
    <p> </p>
    etc.

at Theme Options → Homepage Template → Hero Content only slightly increases the height of the featured image, by a couple of lines perhaps, in my tests.

On the other hand, I can increase the height of the featured image greatly by using either of the codes I’ve previously mentioned above that include the spacer code &nbsp(semicolon) in the middle. Strangely, code entered this way continues to work despite the fact that that it is stripped in the Hero Content box and looks exactly the same as the code that doesn’t work properly after being stripped.

The code that works to greatly increase the featured image size might also fail eventually. I’m running more tests. It holds, at least temporarily and after several minutes, even if I close Customize and reopen it. l

This is the code I’m using, modified here with the semicolon written out to avoid stripping. Use the normal semicolon in the code at Hero Content.
    <p>&nbsp(semicolon)</p>

Ok that worked!!! Thank you! I’ve gone in and out a couple of times and the image is holding to the size I want. You’re right, the middle portion of the code does get stripped out in the hero content. Weird.

So now I have one more question, maybe a dumb question. Is there a way to set the site address to open at the home page I created? Right now, if I choose “view site” it opens to this:

    https://rvtrailtails.wordpress.com

Glad that worked for you. You’re welcome!

Is there a way to set the site address to open at the home page I created?

Yes, you can make that your homepage. Every theme displays the posts page on the front page by default, and you evidently have no published posts. You can assign any static page to display, instead of the posts page, on the front page at Customize → Static Front Page. See the Set a Static “Home” Page (Front Page) support page.

If you intend to create and display posts, then you should also assign (at the same location) another page on which to display your posts page.

The front page settings are also available at classic dashboard admin panel → Settings → Reading (top of the page).

Thank you again. I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out.

No, no published posts yet. Lots of drafts though ha ha. I’m setting up the blog for a long road trip that won’t happen until spring. I’m trying to get everything tweaked now because I doubt I’ll have the time, or steady access to internet, once we’re traveling.

    You’re welcome.

In case you are wondering, your homepage displays the “Nothing Found — It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for…” message because
    1. there are no published posts, and
    2. as part 5 of the Homepage Template section of the Gateway theme says:

If you want to feature specific Posts or Pages, give them a specific tag, then enter that tag in the Featured Content area of the Customizer. If no tag is added, the Homepage template will display your last three posts, excluding Sticky posts

So it looks for your last three posts, doesn’t find any, and so instead of displaying posts it displays the “Nothing Found…” message.

    Correction:
“Gateway theme” — I meant the Gateway theme guide

I did wonder about that but figured it might be the lack of posts. Thanks again for the additional info. Good to know about the last three posts being displayed. I’m really impressed with how much info is in the tutorials and I appreciate being pointed in the right direction.
