Custom header is cropped when set as featured header

    I run Coraline theme.
    I uploaded an image for a header and made it greater than the prescribed height (990 x 331 as opposed to 990 x 180). It displays correctly. However, when I set it as the featured image, it reduces in height, presumably to 180. How can I make the larger setting stick for featured image?
