Custom Header photo uploadable, cropped, but won’t apply

    First Hi and Thanks,
I’m using the Ocean Mist theme. I’ve had a custom header up for about a month, and decided (bad idea) to tweak it by removing it, re-uploading the photo, cropping slightly differently, and applying. I have no problem with the upload, the crop or pressing the “apply” button. It tells me it was successful, but the default photo remains on my blog. When I look for the photo under “media” it says “not found”. Tried a different photo in case that particular photo file was corrupt. Same problem. Any ideas?

You’ll have to change the name of the file; WordPress gets confused when you re-upload a different file with the same name. Also, do you have the CSS upgrade? If so, you can’t use the regular uploader for your header.

Thanks. I’ll change the name of the file. I don’t know enough to know if I have the CSS updgrade-sorry don’t know what CSS is, but I’ll read about it and find out. I assume there will be something in the literature about a new uploader for CSS?
I appreciate so much the fast response and your time.

I looked up CSS and voila, I know what it is in Excel. Duh. No, I don’t have the upgrade. I renamed the photo and re-uploaded it, cropped it, applied, said it was successful, but still have the default header. I’ll try deleting the media files, logging out, rebooting, and a new photo, see if I can get it to work with any photo?

Hmmm…any ideas Raincoaster? I deleted all media files I ever tried out for a header, logged out, rebooted, uploaded (no problem) a photo I’ve never tried to upload (jpg), was able to crop, got the “New header is up” message, but when I look at the site, it’s still the default. All this because it wasn’t broke and I tried to fix it. :)

    1) The source code of your page says the image doesn’t exist; and it’s true: the URL given leads to a 404 (not-found) message, which means the image isn’t in your media library (as you had found). So my understanding is that the theme acknowledges the upload but the image doesn’t get stored in your library. I had also checked soon after you first posted: same thing.

    2) Don’t just reboot: log out and clear your browser’s cache and cookies first. Then try again.

    3) If you still fail, try editing an image to the dimensions specified by the theme (736 x 229 px) so that it will be uploaded as is: sometimes the problem is the cropping. (And anyway you get better quality if you don’t crop the image.)

    4) If that fails too, try uploading and inserting an image in a post, or uploading it directly in your media library, so you can see if there’s a more general problem with the uploader or the library. You could also upload an image (one of those you tried) to an external hosting site (e.g. Photobucket or Fileden) and give us its direct URL, so we can see if there’s something wrong with your JPGs.

    5) If all these fail, you should contact Support.

What a fabulous and detailed answer, thank you so much! Oh lord I have a lot to learn. I thought rebooting WAS clearing my cache (though not the cookies – hey I know something! Yahoo.). Steep learning curve. Thanks for your time and effort!

I needed to edit the image to the exact size, as you suggested. Worked perfectly. Thank you!

You’re welcome – glad you worked it out. (Before your last post I was going to say there was nothing “fabulous” in my answer as long as the problem remained unsolved!)
