Custom Header Sizing for Coraline
-
It says images 990X180 will be used as is. I created a collage and resized it to 990X164 in PikNik, but when I upload, I still have to crop horizontally. I have already cropped the photos in the collage to make them narrower, and I don’t want to delete a photo, because I have this same collage on my website.
The file is already tiny. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi. This is perfectly normal. The only way to avoid cropping is by uploading a header that is EXACTLY the same size as the one prescribed for that theme.

Thanks so much for your answer! I’m not that far off dimension wise, so I guess I’ll have to skew it a bit to get the EXACT dimensions. I was hoping that by being a bit under it would still fit. It’s never that easy!

Coraline claims to use 990×180 for the header, but it actually uses 770×140.
So, if you upload an image that is 770×140, you are invited to crop it.
If you upload an image that is 990×180, it gets shrunk.
This is a deplorable and unsatisfactory state of affairs, and this textbox is not large enough for me to vent my displeasure in full. I tremble with the rage of a thousand housecats whose tails have simultaneously been trodden upon.
According to http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/custom-header-image/ Coraline is descended from Cutline. The descent evidently remains to be perfected.

@jfdiasia: No, it’s the other way round. The Coraline header is 990×180 pixels, and the Support doc is wrong.
Check the default image of the theme:

I’m afraid @jfdiasia is right. Despite custom header images having to be 990*180 to be displayed, when they are displayed they are resized to 770*140. I have just checked – you can see it here:Page with custom header displayed as 770*140
Image displayed on its own as 990×180
You can see the difference, my web-developer toolbar confirms the displayed size to be 770*140 in the full page. I am not a css expert but the theme is doing something weird, requesting 990×180 image then using css to get the browser to display it at a reduced size.

No matter what the theme, the dimensions you must take into account are always the ones shown in Appearance>Header.
The theme is doing nothing weird: you’re just overlooking the fact that the theme has multiple layouts. When you use one of the layouts with two sidebars, the displayed image is 990×180. When you use a 1-sidebar layout, the theme becomes narrower and the image is scaled down to 770×140 (same aspect ratio). And featured images will work only if 990×180 (or larger), regardless of the layout.

Thank you all for your perspicacity. The conundrum has been elucidated to my satisfaction.
I shall now release my house-cat from further discomfort.
