Custom Home Page

I am looking to have 3 images on my front page to lead people to my 3 galleries.

Similar to this front page (though they have more images): http://www.richardrow.com/

I’m hoping there is some way to place 3 images across the home page that could act as links to my 3 galleries.

Eventually, if this works out, I might like to add more sample images on this front page. Similar to this page: http://www.davidsmit.com/ – though I’d like to start clean and simple for now with the 3 image-links.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!
    Josh

Yes you can create a static front page for your blog. Yes you can upload three images onto that page and link them to three different categories in your blog.

Pages are static and are for content that rarely changes. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will show on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page.

The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then create a static front page for your site and a “blog” page for posts. If you choose Choice 1 static front page then you have to create two pages as I said above. After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

    Creating a custom menu
    What’s critical is:
    (1) a clear comprehension of the differences between pages and posts > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
    (2) a clear comprehension of the fact that there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. But we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page. We organize posts by assigning categories to them and until there is one published post in any category there is nothing that can be displayed.) You can create a custom menu and add the categories into the custom menu.

Instead of using a custom header with three images in one like you have done with the Chateau theme, I would recommend creating a text widget with HTML to display three images and then position that over the space where your header image is now. Or you could use three separate image widgets and reposition those. If you can get some images added into widgets on your http://joshhagen.com/ site, I can help you with some CSS to show you what I mean.

Also, just as an alternative to think about, you might really like one of the premium themes we have such as Photography or React. Those are both really art portfolio friendly.

P.S. The illustrations on your site look way cool. I love art portfolio sites!

Okay, I finally have some time to get back to my website editing. I’ve been trying my best to create a front page that would have 3 (or possibly more like my examples in my initial post above) large side by side images (taking up a large part of the screen of at least the focal point of the center of the screen) to act as links to my 3 gallery pages. I have figures out how to create all my other pages without a hitch and the blog is running swimmingly.

Here’s my problem with creating what I want:
    – I tried inserting the images onto the page, but they don’t line up. They also do not get large enough without also not lining up.
    – designsimply, you had mentioned using an image widget. I’m familiar with this, but in wordpress.com I cannot see how to place it on the center of the page – just the sidebar or the footer. I would be happy to gain some CSS support to figure this out.

I hope I’ve made sense in what I’m shooting for. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Josh

You need to use CSS to reposition the images. It helps to look at a specific example. Can you please add the images to the sidebar first and then let me know when that’s done?
