Custom image size?
-
Currently I’m editing the size of an image via the html code editor, but am I missing something?
The only options I seem have to size an image block in the block settings are Thumbnail, Medium, Large or Full-size.
There is no Image Dimensions dialogue boxI’m using an iPad to compose posts.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
What’s the post or page you’re workig on (share address)? I checked your site and I see that you’re using the Classic editor and not the Block editor.
-
I’m using the block editor for some post image headers, but not all because I can’t custom resize images in a post unless I use the classic editor.
This post for example https://bookdout.wordpress.com/2021/04/17/review-second-first-impressions-by-sally-thorne/
The header image is using an image block – all I can do is choose from small medium and large, which is fine because large is suitable
(The text is in the classic editor though)In a post like this one https://bookdout.wordpress.com/2021/04/19/its-monday-what-are-you-reading-sundaypost-sundaysalon-12/ or this one https://bookdout.wordpress.com/2021/04/18/bookshelf-bounty-24/ though, not being able to customise the image sizes are an issue

Hi there,
The primary difference between the first post you mention and the two posts you are having issues with is that the images in the second two are inside of the “classic block” which means the use the Classic Editor image tools, which are more limited.
If you use an image block outside of the classic block, it will afford you more size options and flexibility. However, images in the classic editor can be resized buy clicking and dragging the image itself.
This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to do it.
You can view the at this link: https://d.pr/v/UOTcbl
I’m recording on my desktop computer, but are you able to resize images in this way by using your iPad? Thanks for the additional info!

Hi
Thanks for your reply.I’ve set up a draft Test Image post on my blog. I think a mod with access to an iPad needs to take a look and let me know what might be happening.
Sizing images in the classic editor isn’t the issue. The issue is sizing image blocks.
Firstly, resize handles do not appear around an image block on my iPad, and even if they did it’s difficult to ensure uniformity of size in images, even if they are side by side, because touch screens don’t do well with nuance.
As you can see I use book covers mainly in my posts. In the classic editor I can easily use a standard 220px height in the custom size dialogue to ensure a uniform look that allows three covers across the post width.
In the block editor, accessed by selecting the cog icon, where there is only an option of thumbnail, medium, large or full-size, it seems to work on a proportional algorithm, meaning ‘medium’ images are not necessarily the same size (which is clearer when you preview the post), unless arranged side by side.
Additionally I can only fit two medium sized image blocks across the page – as shown when the post is previewed , or three or more thumbnail size – which are too small for my preference.
I appreciate the effort in understanding the issue.

Just to make sure – are you using the mobile app on your iPad, or are you accessing your site from the browser?

Thanks for the details.
We tried to reproduce this on the latest generation iPad, but we can’t see what you’re referring to. The resize handles are there, the same as the size dialog in the right sidebar, have a look:Could you share a screenshot of what you see on your end? You can use an online tool for that (such as https://snipboard.io/) and paste the link into your reply.
Additionally I can only fit two medium sized image blocks across the page – as shown when the post is previewed , or three or more thumbnail size – which are too small for my preference.
This seems to be a theme issue. The theme you’re using has been retired, and so it may not be fully compatible with the Block Editor. It looks like the editor content width won’t accurately reflect the theme’s content width.
Changing the theme should help with that.In general, however, if what you want is to add multiple images side by side, I’d suggest using Gallery Block instead.
This way, the images will have consistent size, and you can choose how many columns you want to display:https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/gallery-block/.

Hi there,
Are you using the editor from the WP Admin interface or the new interface at https://wordpress.com/ ?

I’m a little confused as to why the image sizes aren’t showing in the block options for you. Is that a new issue for you, or is this something you’ve been trying to do but could not, all along? It seems to me that at a certain width, those options go away — possibly to simplify the experience on mobile.
Are you viewing your iPad in portrait or landscape mode? And does changing the orientation make any difference?
Also, have you considered using a Gallery block instead of trying to manually tune each image width? If you would but can’t because you need individual links, let us know; we can surface that issue.

To answer your first question, it’s always been the case since blocks were introduced.
But unbelievably, at your suggestion, I tried viewing in landscape mode and the image editing options – including handles and manual resize options – suddenly appear.
That’s a rather extraordinary quirk – and one you might now want to mention in your documentation – or better yet rectify, since blogging in landscape view on an iPad is not terribly convenient as the practical ‘workspace’ is so limited
I do appreciate your patience in trying to resolve the issue for me though, thank you.

Hi there,
I see you noticed earlier you’re using the 5th-gen iPad. I looked up its specs, and that model has a screen width of 6.6 inches. Meanwhile the current iPad has a screen width of 6.8 inches, and shows the image sizing options as expected.
So I think the issue here is simply that the breakpoints at which the display switches between tablet and mobile views fall somewhere between those two screen sizes – with all the variety of screen sizes available these days, web developers have to make a judgement call at which point to make the switch, and it looks like in this case that point falls somewhere between these two screen sizes.
So it’s not really something that has to be fixed, though I can certainly understand how it can cause confusion. A workaround that might work is if you just zoom out a bit in Safari. That should allow you to see the view with the editor sidebar in the portrait orientation.
-
Thanks, zooming to 85% in portrait mode seems to work fine.
I understand you can’t cater for everyone, but I do suggest documentation be available that states there is a display issue for smaller screens/older tablets, and that the *workaround* is to zoom out or change orientation.
Such information would have saved me all the months of frustration with the Block Editor since it’s been introduced, (though I still don’t care for it) and I’m sure I can’t be the only one to have experienced the issueI do appreciate your help, and I’ve marked the thread as resolved.
