Custom links not working in Safari

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I need help with my wordpress.com blog available at grinvites.org.

In Chrome, all of my menu links work beautifully. The following three links are custom links that direct to external sites: ETSY SHOP, INSTAGRAM and FACEBOOK.

In Safari, these links don’t work. If you hover over the link, the status bar displays the correct link address, but when you click, nothing happens. This is getting extremely frustrating. Please help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi – thank you so very much for responding

    Safari: version 9.0.1
Chrome: version 49.0.2623.110 (up to date)

Viewed from another computer in Mozilla and the links work. Also viewed from Safari on an iPhone 6 and they work.

However, still not working from Chrome or Safari on my computer. It’s a MacBookAir and Chrome is perfectly up-to-date, Safari only slightly behind.

Sure thing, thanks – it just sounded like you had a quick fix. Thanks!

Hi there! Anyone have any ideas? I need to send the website to important connections today and need the links to work. Thank you

I just took a look at your site in both Chrome and Safari and all of the links appear to be working properly for me. Are you still running into trouble with this?

If so, can you try clearing your browser’s cache to see if that helps with the custom links? If that doesn’t work, can you double-check if you’re using any add-ons or extensions in either Chrome or Safari?

Hi, thank you so much for responding. Yes, I’m still having trouble with this – I had to delete the links I was having trouble with because they were making the site look unprofessional. Can you put up a post when you’re available and I will put the links back up temporarily? Thanks!

  • Hi @desiharmony, sorry we didn’t see that earlier. Can you go ahead and put up the links now so we can take a look?

Alternatively, would you like to try to get in touch with us via chat? You can do that here: https://wordpress.com/help/contact

Hi – thank you for responding! Ok I just put up a link. There are two links on my side navigation that say “shop.” The first one DOES NOT WORK – it’s programmed to be a link directly to my etsy shop but it won’t go anywhere.

    Suggestions? Thanks!

  • Ahh I see the issue.

You’re using GoDaddy’s Domain Masking. It’s meant to make it look like your site has a custom domain, but its methods for doing so can break links in your site.

Can you either use the WordPress.com address ( https://grinvites.wordpress.com/ ) or use Domain Mapping? Here’s how:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Basically you would buy the upgrade, then update the domain so that it uses our name servers instead of GoDaddy’s. If you need help with it, let us know.

hmmm. ok. quick question before I do that –

I already have a link in my navigation that goes to an external page. If you click “Get Started” it goes to a survey page. To make that work, I just entered the link code as the page name in WordPress.

    GET STARTED

Trying to use that tactic for my etsy shop didn’t work. Any ideas why?

  • Not every site allows masked forwarding, and I’m guessing Etsy is one. Honestly, masked forwarding tends to break navigation (as you can see) as well as other aspects of the site, so I can understand why they wouldn’t allow it.

In fact I just googled “etsy masked forwarding” and found several links suggesting they banned it several years ago. The survey company apparently does not.

But think about this: look at the address at the top of any page on your site. If someone found an article they liked, and wanted to send a direct link to their friend, how could they do that? Every link on the site, and even off the site, says grinvites.org at the top. Or what if a user kept browsing and somehow landed on a different site all together, but they still thought it was yours because of grinvites.org at that top? I could see that easily happening at Etsy, too, which is probably another reason they seem to block masked forwarding.

    Anyway, I hope that helps.

Hi! Thank you for this. I did everything you suggested and it helped a lot!! Thank you for figuring that out. *Aside: Every page on my site still appears as “grinvites.org” – but it’s ok, I think it’s the best I can do while using the wordpress.com blog interface.

    Thanks!!

  • Much better! And I can see pages like this:

So it looks good! Enjoy your weekend. :)
