Could I install a custom membership plugin that may change the look of users profile pages?

Hello,
You could install plugins only with a Business or Ecommerce plan; with the free and the other premium plan other than Business (or Ecommerce,as we said) you can only have access to built-in plugins preinstalled in every WordPress.com website.
You can both search in the plugin directory or upload a zip file if the particular plugin you want to install is not present in the directory.Hope this is helpful!

Understood about the upgrade to the business or ecommerce plan in order to use plugins. Wanted to know before I upgraded how it worked.
One more question: Will I be able to update any plugins that have updates in my wordpress.com site dashboard? How will that work?

Sure, the plugins will be automatically updated as soon as a new version is available (you can turn this feature off but it’s not recommended).

One more thing worth nothing is that as a best practice, it is better to install one plugin at a time, to make sure they work well with your site and the other plugins you have, and if they don’t you can quickly spot and uninstall them. It is also better to only install the ones you really need and uninstall all the ones you don’t need instead of disabling them.
