Custom Menu Help

I am working on the menu for this blog:
    https://spaghettisauceandmeatballs.wordpress.com/

I am using the Chronicle theme. I thought I was going to be able to easily modify the menu but I am running into a snag.

This blog is going to have a lot of recipes. I wanted to have one “recipe” menu item along with About, home and others.

My idea was on the menu have the word “Recipes”, click on that and get a drop down showing you links to several recipes.

However, seems I can only have a menu item if it’s an actual page. So do I have to create a “recipes” page, then use that as a menu item then add recipe links under that menu item?

I certainly don’t want to have all my recipes as menu items.

    Thanks for the help.

  • However, seems I can only have a menu item if it’s an actual page.

    From the menus FAQ:

    Q. How do I create an un-clickable parent tab for my sub-menu

To create a menu item that is not clickable but will contain submenu items, just add a Link menu item and leave the “Link Address (URL)” field blank.

Let me know if this does the trick.

Thanks, but that does not work. I just tried it. If you leave the URL blank and use “Recipes” for Link Text and then click “add to menu” nothing will add. It wants a URL. :-(

Well, now it seems I have another problem. I believe it is theme specific n regards to the Chronicle theme. Will drop my question in that forum. I thought for sure a premium theme that I had to pay for would have a nice menu with drop downs. But I can’t seem to get the menu to do that. If i drag pages into the menu as a sub under a main menu item it just shows up as a another menu item and starts a second line of links on the menu bar. That will not work at all, will get to big and cumbersome. Will see what I get on the Chronicle theme forum.

I am using the Saga Theme. I want to create separate menu headings and categorize all related blogs under each. But none of my menu headings show up on my main site page, even though I am creating them on my dashboard. When I click on “Menu” on the top right hand corner, to check if the headings I have made have gone live, the Menu scroll doesn’t drop-down to show anything. Help?

@removearticle, for a top level menu item you do not want to link to anything, for the URL just put in the # symbol.

    @ sumirankashyapsahni,

If you’ve created a custom menu and it is not displaying, you might have to deploy it as follows. At the bottom of the Menu Structure, at Menu Settings > Theme Locations, check “Primary Navigation.” Then save the change.

    Great! You’re welcome. : )

  • I’ve updated the menu FAQ to indicate that a # symbol is required, not a blank URL.

removearticle – does that work for you?

Thanks, I actually went ahead and made a main page for my “Recipes” drop down menu as another page that will link to all recipes. Works great. I will keep the # symbol method in mind for future though. Valuable to know!

Very happy with it. I now just have to finish slowly bringing over ALL my content from previous website. Going to take a while. So far I am pleased with Wordrpress :-) I do believe it’s going to be a nice relationship.

  • Excellent, glad you’re off to a good start! Good luck bringing over the rest of your content. What you have so far looks very yummy!

I’m happy to have you here with us on WordPress.com. If you need further help in the future, don’t hesitate to start a new thread.
