Custom menu restrictions???

  • Unknown's avatar

Does anyone know if there is a limit / cap to the number of categories you can choose to have in your menus?? Currently I think I have about ten top level menu choices and for a few of those I am trying to add hundreds of categories. I continue to get this error as I try to add more categories:

    Goshdarnit!

Something has gone wrong with our servers. It’s probably Matt’s fault.

We’ve just been notified of the problem.

Hopefully this should be fixed ASAP, so kindly reload in a minute and things should be back to normal.

    Thanks for the help.

There is no limit to the number of categories and sub-categories we create and there is not limt to the number we choose to include as items in a custom menu, other than common sense. We provide Categories for our readers’ use and frankly I don’t have any readers who are going to scoll through hunderds of categories.

    Thank you for your reply.

However, if there is no limit to the number of categories I can add to my custom menu than what is the reason behind the page crashing every time I try to add any more to it? Is WordPress currently experiencing some technical difficulties (past 24hrs) or is there some other reason?
    thanks

We can’t answer that question unless or until you provided all your specifics. These are the troubleshooting steps we take whenever any issues like this arise:
clearing your browser cache and cookies > http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
using the browser with all extensions or add-ons disabled
updating the browser to the latest stable version (not a buggy BETA browser version) http://browsehappy.com/
confirming third party cookies is enabled http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=61416
    confirming JavaScript is enabled http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654
confirming Flash is updated http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ and if required installing the latest version of Flash http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
resetting your router and modem and rebooting your computer
then logging in using the secure https:// log-in see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
    trying another browser

If those do not work for you then we need to know
    (1) how you are connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com. The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers.

    (2) exactly which browser and version of it are you using. If you don’t know click here to find out > http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

There is no limit to the number of categories a blog can have, but perhaps there are limits in what a custom menu can do. I think you may have reached that limit.
