  i have been trying to add a post to a new page but have not been able to. I read on the site about category pages but when i try to add a category to a page the button doesnt show up. can someone please help?

  There’s only one page you can put posts on. You can add categories to posts and make “category archives” part of your custom menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/

  The significant distinction to understand is the difference between posts and pages. Posts have dates and can be categorized or tagged. Pages are static and (in most themes) are not dated and in all themes they cannot be categorized or tagged.

  The category (tag) “pages” and the dated archive “pages” have links which can be used in a custom menu. Pages are just static pages: their links go only to specific pages.

  One can use the links to categories (tags) with a custom menu. That is you can make tabs in a custom menu to those category links:
