Custom name servers don't stay

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I’m helping a client direct her domain to another host. She bought the domain name from WordPress.com.

I edited the name servers pointing them to blue host, since we were initially going to use them. This worked fine.

But after updating the name servers to different host, WordPress.com keeps changing them back to blue host after a few hours following my update to the new host.

The name server of the new host is not the typical format of ns1.hostname.etc…. The name server is simply login.mymusicstaff. com.

Could this be the cause of the problem?

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

I can try to change those records for you, and can have our developers look at it if it won’t save, but I will need the request to come from the account that owns the domain, so can you please ask your client to post in this thread and confirm that she wants to do this?

And just to confirm, this is for the domain, radhaschoolofmusic.com, correct?

    Hi Kokkieh,

Thanks for your reply. I was trying to direct the site to where it’s hosted (mymusicstaff.com) but they said to use CNAME to redirect.

It doesn’t seem to be working, so they said to contact WordPress.

I will have my client post in this thread to confirm that she would like you to figure out why radhaschoolofmusic.com isn’t redirecting to the hosting site.

    Thanks.

Hi I’m the owner of Radha School of Music and I’d like to figure out why my website isn’t redirecting to mymusicstaff when i dont’ type www before my website. If you could help figure this out that’d be great!!

    Thanks,

    ~Radha Windham

The CNAME record you are using to redirect your site specifies that the “www” must be used. You can ask your current host if it’s possible to use a CNAME without that instead.

For example, the default CNAME for WordPress.com sites is *.radhaschoolofmusic.com, which works for either with or without the “www”, but then the “www” also won’t display on your site.

I can edit that for you, but I don’t want to do that without your go-ahead, and without you checking with your host whether it will break your site :)

Please go ahead and make the change to the default CNAME for radhaschoolofmusic.com to point to login.mymusicstaff.com

Their system knows how to handle both the www and the non- www version of my domain name automatically.

    Thanks!

  • It appears it’s not possible to create a new CNAME record that will work for both with and without “www”, and I can’t edit the default one.

Can you ask your current host if they can provide an IP address/A-record instead? That should actually work better than using a CNAME.

If you can also give me the Name Servers for your new host I can check if I’m able to get them to save.

They said you can use this IP Address: 199.115.88.195

They don’t provide any name server information…that’s what you (wordpress) is providing to you (so they’re not really sure why you’ve asked for that)

    Thanks!

  • I have added the IP-address, so your site now works both with and without the “www”
