Custom name servers don't work
-
I purchased a domain name from WordPress (cwprojectsuccess.com) and had it pointing to my cwprojectsuccess.wordpress.com site, but now I want to point it elsewhere. I set the custom name servers with the info from my new site (a hostgator-hosted wordpress instance), but it’s been more than 72 hours and my purchased domain goes to a freeresultsguide.com page, rather than my hostgator site. What’s wrong?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Let’s ask Staff to assist you with sorting this out. I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for Staff help. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question

Hi jennywarilacoaching,
I’ve checked cwprojectsuccess.com and a site is loading, which suggests the name servers needed more time to propagate. Please try clearing your browser cache if you are still unable to see the new site:
Browsers sometime cache old DNS but that should help flush them out.
Come back to me if you have any problems.

Hi Gemma,
I cleared my cache, and it’s been more than 72 hours (almost 96 now) since I made the change, and it’s still not working. I had this trouble once before and never resolved it, so I’m thinking there’s something else going on. What’s the next step?
Thanks!
Jenny

Hi Jenny,
I’ve looked at cwprojectsuccess.com again today and the name servers are not propagating correctly. I reset them back to WordPress.com and re-added HostGators name servers, which should start the propagation process again.
Could you also double check with HostGator that only two name servers are needed?
In the meantime, I’ll keep an eye on cwprojectsuccess.com for any changes.

Thank you Gemma for your help. It turns out that with Hostgator, if you have the most basic hosting plan, as we do, you are only allowed one domain. Phooey! It only took me three tries to get that information from Hostgator support. I set cwprojectsuccess.com back to our WordPress blog, which is out of date but at least better than nothing, while we decide whether to upgrade our Hostgator plan. I hate it when marketing limitations interfere with technology!

Hi –
I’m following up for gemmacevans here. Happy to hear you received some clarification from Hostgator. We are close by if you need anything else. Take care :)
