    Hi guys,

Needed some help, understand that only paid plans have the option of installing custom plugins, my question is can I install a custom plugin on a free plan if I use an external hosting service for my wordpress? – say hostgator etc?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hello there,

Yes, you are correct. If you transfer to an external hosting service you will be able to use custom plug-ins. You will also have to pay a hosting fee to your hosting service and manage more of the behind-the-scenes things that WordPress.com takes care of automatically.

If you would like to take a more detailed look at this we have a guide here that explains how to move to a self-hosting service:

I hope that is helpful and please let me know if you need any more support!

  • Hi there,

If you plan on using another service to host your WordPress site, then you don’t need a WordPress.com free site or a plan.

WordPress.com and the self-hosted version of WordPress.org are two different things and you can read more about it here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
