Custom Post Order

  • Unknown's avatar

There should be a way to custom order posts (or put your most popular / interesting posts first), i don’t know if someone has already talked about this, the only way seems to be to use code or plugins, that seems complicated.. and even when i try that there is no ‘add plugin’ option for me, the plugin page even says “Uploading your own plugins is not available on WordPress.com” yet i wonder if that is some weird mistake because lots of people say adding plugins is the only way to do this. Some options for post order seems pretty essential, this would be good to have!

    Hello there,
If you are reading anything that makes you think that bloggers can install plugins, custom themes or third party themes on sites hosted by wordpress.COM, then you are mistaken/misinformed. We have never had that ability. You are confusing wordpress.COM hosted blogs and wordpress.ORG installs on paid hosting.

Blogger installed plugin capability does not exist on WordPress.COM blogs and there is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality. Permalink structure cannot be changed on sites hosted by wordpress.com

For that type of functionality you’d need a self-hosted WordPress.ORG software install running on a paid web hosting service.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/

A self-hosted WordPress site may be what you need. WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. Unlike wordpress.com, you can upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, conduct e-commerce and edit the database. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

This guide will explain how to move your WordPress.com site to another hosting platform: Moving to a Self-Hosted WordPress Site
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/

We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to
    (1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
    (2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

As you need a site that is not hosted here, if you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG account, then click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right-hand corner of the page that opens, https://wordpress.org/support/register.php so you can post to the support forums there.

There is no universal setting you can use to achieve custom post order on a wordpress.COM hosted site.

Blogs are essentially a reverse chronological order publishing tool wherein the most recent published post will display on top. You cannot change this order on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. There is no upgrade that allows you to change this post order on a free hosted WordPress.com blog. It’s designed to serve your visitors as they come to read the most recent posts and will not be inclined to trawl through hundreds of posts to locate it.

See here for the option of creating a book-like structure > http://en.support.wordpress.com/write-a-book/ Perhaps that will work for you.

Or you could use a single sticky post as an index page > http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-posts

Or you can falsify every date-stamp before publishing.

Thanks so much for all this info! that helps. i’ll look into what you’ve given me here! (and i agree that reverse chronological (as it is) is the best default setting if i could only chose one forever, ..this is more as an added bonus for fine tuning things, for the occasional post that i want to promote more than others)
