Custom Posts/Categories

I’m in the process of potentially moving over to WordPress, and I’m working on a template behind the scences to make it look how I want it. One thing I’d like to be able to do is “quick” posts that are simply a sentence or two.

I’d like these to look different, something nearly identical to what is done on “The Big Lead” and shown below.

    Example Photo – http://i570.photobucket.com/albums/ss146/Twins_Territory/Picture10.png

It seems like it might be simple and based on putting the post in a certain category. This would go perfect with pointing readers to a link or a quick news bite, but it’s beyond me.

Anybody know how to do something similar?

You won’t be able to apply an external template to a WordPress.COM blog. Working with the CSS here is quite different from working with CSS elsewhere. Are you talking about working with the CSS upgrade on a private blog, or using the free Preview features?

I’m just trying to make sure you don’t go too far down a road that’s never going to take you where you need to go.

I guess I’ll probably be working with the private WordPress blog or at least using the customization upgrade available at WordPress.com.

Even with the upgrade, you cannot apply an external theme to a WordPress.com blog, nor change the basic functionality of existing themes via any upgrade. Unfortunately, I don’t know any modification that will do exactly what you want there, but there may be further updates from the one or two forum volunteers who know WP.com CSS well.

in the meantime, you can check out http://csswiz.wordpress.com for some tips on what’s possible without the upgrade.
