Custom Sidebars – Dynamic Sidebar Widget Area Manager

is there any way I can get this plug-in for my site even though it is hosted and made at WP dot com?

This would be a great feature to be able to tailor each page’s sidebar differently according to content. If the sidebar is always the same on every page unless one uses a different page layout, such as full width, the page is limited design and content-wise. In some cases you can have sidebar areas vary left/right, top/bottom, but they appear consistently the same on every page. So maybe you want the footer widgets not to be on every page, but on one or two pages. and maybe you want the widgets to be different in the right sidebar between your home page and the next page, such as your about page. then maybe you want a different set of widgets for a sidebar on the 3rd page and so on.

I just think this would be a fantastic thing to have and not have to move away to get it.

    thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Seeing as it a .org feature I do not believe it can come over to a .com blog unless they make that feature available as well.

have you looked about possible add-on plug-ins that might help with the diversity of your pages or other themes? You may have to pay but it could give you what you prefer.

i know – that’s what i’m hoping for. i did check the plugins but the site already had all of the default ones, and apparently no way to add on. i tried to find out if there might be perhaps an upgrade or a premium template that might have this plugin ” built-in”, or that would allow a plugin to be installed, but i could not find any way to search the templates on those specific points. So I started going through templates that look like they might work basically, to see if that option of variable sidebar page-to-page or the plugin was available, but it was not something I could get. I could not glean the specific plugin info from any of the premium templates I was looking at in the preview mode either, so I would not know whether or not the template offered what I’m looking for, I would assume not, and so would not be informed enough to be able to go for it.

So suppose I have to move to dot org to get that plugin? that would also mean moving my account to a different host, right?

You can hide or show widgets on certain pages or page types by changing the widget visibility options. It’s definitely not as fancy as some third party widgets, but you’d have to switch to a self-hosted WordPress.org installation to use those.

thanks! i think the visibility options could be useful, I just wasn’t familiar with the protocol, but i checked your link and it looks like something i could use and more importantly, be able to do, great!

Yep, it’s a bit of a pain as you have to include every single widget that you ever want to be shown on any page, but it is remarkably flexible even if the process of setting everything up can be a bit labour intensive. Plus this way you don’t have to worry about self-hosting!
