Custom Templates

    I have a 3 part question:

    1) If I want to use a custom template, do I need to have my own domain? Assuming the answer is YES
    2) I want to first try out the custom template with a different domain so as not to bring down my current site which is hosted by Blogger (also on a custom domain). But it seems like I can’t try out until I pay $10 to use custom domain. Once I point to a beta domain, can I then switch the domain to the real one without having to pay another $10?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We can’t answer questions without a link to your blog, starting with http.

My current site is http://www.travelandtweet.com and is a CNAME from my web host to Blogger.
I would like to migrate this over to WP, but not before I test it out on http://blog.travelandtweet.com. Is it possible for me to only pay the $10 once?

So I would point beta.travelandtweet.com to CNAME travelandtweet.wordpress.com via my web host
Pay $10 to WP to allow the custom domain.
Install the custom template on beta.travelandtweet.com so I can play around with this and get the site ready.
Switch my domain so that travelandtweet.com now points to travelandtweet.wordpress.com and get rid of beta.

If your blog is actually hosted here at WordPress.com, regardless of whether it points to some other domain, you can only use the themes available here. I assume that when you say “template” you’re referring to what we call “themes.”

Yes I am referring to themes. Can I not get a custom Word press theme and install it on the blog?
