Customer Download Access

Im looking to set up a marketing pack download page for our customers. However i want to be able to restrict what content each customer can access (some customers will only buy certain products from us so there isn’t much value in allowing them to have everything).

I would like new customers to have to sign up registering their specific product interest, for us to then provide sign in details. We can then use the product interests they provided to then restrict access to those relevant products.

I’ve looked into members area type plug ins but they either look extremely complicated and i can’t work out how to achieve what i’m looking for or they simply don’t allow the specific customer access restrictions I’m looking for.

Can anyone help me with my dilemma. I would be appreciative of any advise.

  • Hi @danielhaydenh , welcome to our community! If your customers are buying specific downloadable files, have you thought about just using WooCommerce with digital downloads? It might be a bit more setup at first, but then you won’t have to be handing out logins, etc. for them. They’ll just have access to their files in their account. Would that work for you?

Or you may be able to use the Premium Content Block: set up your “subscriptions” to be your different groups. Our support for paid plans will know more, since this is a feature of our paid plans.

On that note, do you know whether you’re be hosting the site here with us? Our services include fast & reliable hosting, maintenance, security, spam filtering, direct support with paid plans, and a bunch of extra features that don’t come with the free software. Or, you can use your own DIY copy of WordPress with another host, and hire out services as needed. We have more on the differences here. Let us know how we can help!

This is not an e-commerce download. its for our distributors to download product marketing materials.

  • If you’d be hosting with us then it does sound like the Premium Content block could possibly do what you need then. You can set up “subscriptions” (which don’t necessarily require payment, they can be set up as free) and add different distributors to different subscriptions so that when they sign in, they can view/access the materials from specific pages. I should note that the materials added to the Media library are indexable by default however; so that’s worth bearing in mind if these materials shouldn’t be visible to search engines.

We have a few suggestions for the various options here – in general it sounds like you’d want a membership setup so one of these might be useful for you:

Private sites on WordPress.com don’t have their media indexed, so you could absolutely set up a public site for information, and a private site where the materials are distributed.

Alternatively you could go for a Business plan (which also rolls in our daily backup, SFTP access, Live Chat support and 200gb storage) and use additional plugins to set up specific access groups/roles that can be applied to your distributors:
