    Your ads say wordpress is free. But when I go to create a site, it wants to bill me.

    Hi there,

    WordPress.com indeed offer free plans that come with a free WordPress.com site address, e.g. example.wordpress.com.

    To stay on a free plan, please make sure you chose the free site address when you’re creating a new site. See the screenshot here.

    P/S: If you choose Sell products or collect payments option at the first page of the site creation process, you may not be able to choose a free WordPress.com site address.
