Customise blog post preview
-
I’ve just changed theme from Sela, and can’t see an option to stop the blog showing the full post, instead of a preview with a read more tag below.
Is there a good CSS hack to do this?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Your theme description page with set up instructions is at https://wordpress.com/theme/venture
Most newer themes display excerpts by default. This Themes showcase filter lists all themes that display excerpts by default: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/blog-excerpts
Most newer themes also have the Content Options panel in the Customizer https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/, which allows you to choose between displaying the full post or an excerpt.
If you want to display only post excerpts on the front page or the blogs page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/The read more tag can be inserted once only into any post to change the front page or main page for posts display from full post to an excerpt. The split in the text does not display to you in preview mode but it will be there after the post is published.
Please Read Go Back and Edit Posts https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/#go-back-and-edit-posts and be sure to click Update to publish the after your editing.
For other ways to split content see > https://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/

Thanks for that! I’ve inserted read more tags to achieve my desired excerpt.
Any idea how I might get a featured image on the main blog page via css?

I assume you are talking about your News page. We could add an image to the #mastead div, which is the one that contains the title/tagline and navigation. It gets a bit funky on smaller screens. See what you think with this as a starting point.
.blog #masthead { background: url('https://ashrouten.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/cropped-day-two-skiing.jpg') no-repeat scroll right top; height: 450px; }I just grabbed an image from your media library for the above example.
