Customise error..
-
I cannot customise my layout. When I open the layout editing page it freezes on the loading editing tools blank page. I have logged out and logged back in, restarted my computer, cleared by browsing data, tried a different web browser and finally tried from a second computer and it the page still won’t load. As a result the homepage on my blog reads ‘Oops! That page can’t be found.’ I need to rectify this problem.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I am having the same problem, I was able to customise earlier on today, however I can’t now. I’m hoping it’s just a temporary glitch.

Almost every theme here has some degree of customizable features. However, there is no master list. You need to search each theme http://wordpress.com/themes/ and determine exactly what features they have to offer because there are no cookie cutter themes here at WordPress.com.
Note that you do not need to load the design tools unless you have the Custom Design upgrade, which it appears that you two have not purchased.
https://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/custom-design/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/editing-css/All of the very same functions can be accessed from your dashboard.
Appearance > Header
Appearance > Background
Appearance > Theme Options (applicable only to some themes)
Settings > Reading (set a static front page)
Site Title and Tagline > Settings > General -
If you are using the “Try Now” preview mode for the paid Custom Design upgrade, https://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/custom-design/ the settings related to that upgrade will save but they won’t show up on your blog unless you have purchased the upgrade.
To go back to the free options, go to Appearance → Themes → Customize → Colors and click the “exit the preview” link in yellow at the top of the panel on the right. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/why-customize-themes-doesn%c2%b4t-work?replies=5#post-1316880

I must have used the “Try Now” preview mode, it was my first time changing themes so I thought that customisation was standard, hence why it didn’t work for me. Confusion averted, thanks a million for the quick response!

You’re welcome. :)
re: the 404 (page not found) front error message
By default the front page of your blog displays all posts. The 404 (page not found) error message on the front page of the blog appeared because the Admin of the blog deleted the placeholder Hello World post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/not-found/ As soon as you publish a post, not a page it will disappear. Read the differences between Pages and Posts.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/If you want to change themes on a free hosted WordPress.com blog you must be logged in under the exact same username that registered the blog and who is the Admin of the blog. Note that no content is ever lost when changing themes.
Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes
browse themes until you find one you like and click “activate”
or type in the name of the theme you want to use and
click the “activate” link when it appearsAfter you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.
