Customising a child theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi everyone!

I’v read that it is a good idea to create a child theme before editing any CSS. How do I go about and make changes without hurting my existing customization if I am already using a child theme? So, I am using Blossom pretty theme which is already a child theme of Blossom Feminine and I would like to make the following changes:

    – Remove the text “category” which appears next to the categories.
    – Remove the designer credit (no option available in customiser). I tried using the plugin but since I am not very familiar with html css, hence I am scared i might do some harm.
    – Also would it be possible to arrange the posts in a grid view on my homepage?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much! Have a fantastic day!

  • Hello, I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your website. However, your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted with Bluehost.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

https://wordpress.org/support/ is a great resource for sites using the open source WordPress.org software, and you can find support for that at: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

With that said, you can create a child theme following this guide: https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/child-themes/

Your hosting provider’s support team may also be able to assist.

Thank you for the info macmanx!

Whenever I try logging in https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ it does not let me log in with the user id and password even though my website is hosted on wordpress.org
Any idea why this is happening?

Also, you’v shared the link to create child themes. How do i create a child theme of a child theme? Since I am already working on a child theme Blossom pretty.

    Thanks!

  • How you log into WordPress.org is entirely separate from how you log into your site.

If you’ve never posted there before, you’ll need to register for a new account.

There is no way to create a child theme of a child theme.

Oh thanks. I registered but it seems impossible to find where to post! Well i’ll try to figure that out.

One last question, I am aware that a child theme of a child theme cannot be created. Therefore, in order to customise a child theme I can directly edit the CSS? The plugin i am using though shows an option of duplicating the child theme or should I duplicate the child theme first and then make changes to the css files.

    Thanks much!

  • I’d recommend duplicating it first then :)
