Customising Drop Down Menu

I have been getting to grips and learning this new way of WordPress site building. There are a few things I don’t like about it but I’m learning or at least trying to learn how everything works. One thing I was wondering is there a way I can change the style of the drop down menu. I don’t really like the way it sits and work rather have it directly under the main menu category.
Is this doable on a free design or do I have to stick with the one horrible design that is given to you?

I wanted to check your site but as its not public yet, I wasn’t able to. Maybe you could share a few photos or examples of how exactly you would want it to like.
If you dont like the drop down menu on your current theme, you can always edit the pattern or probably create your header or homepage from scratch. -
Basically the drop down menu hovers just below the menu text and I would rather have it slightly lower so it appears under the black strip that that menu sits in, like it comes out of the black strip.
