customising for colour

With the basic free version of WordPress, am I able to change the background colour, font or text colour ? The template descriptions seem to indicate the colour combinations of each design as if that’s not the case unless I subscribe … just seeking clarification.

You can change various settings for each theme. The specifics vary depending on the theme you choose, but there are a variety of customizations within each one. When you click the “Customize” half of the Themes double-button, you’ll find a variety of options for the theme you’ve chosen, including colors and fonts. There will be some premade palettes already assembled, but in most cases, you’ll at least be able to alter the background color at will.
With a premium or business plan, you do have more freedom to alter themes, down to the .css, but even on the free plan you still have quite a lot of room to express yourself, I think.
