customising for E Commerce

Is it possible to customize the theme with CSS?

The real issue is what you mean by e commerce. From the FAQ entry called Adsense and other ads:

In addition to AdSense type ads, please do not use the following services on your blog: sponsored / paid posts including PayPerPost, ReviewMe and Smorty; affiliate / referral links to the following domains: usercash, clickbank, clickhop, cashrocks, payingcash; clicktrackers and any promotion of the “I made a million on the internet and so can you” type of advertising.

If you are in any doubt, ask.

We have a very low tolerance for blogs created purely for search engine optimization or commercial purposes, machine-generated blogs, and will continue to nuke them, so if that’s what you’re interested in WordPress.com is not for you.

What, exactly, did you have in mind? You won’t be able to add a shopping cart, for instance.

You are interested in two things: customization and commerce. WordPress.com has limits on each of these things.
That makes me suspect that WordPress.com might not be the best place for the blog you have in mind.
You can still use WordPress software, though. See WordPress.org for info on downloading the software, finding a host for it, etc.
Of course, if you provide more details of what you want to do, we might find that you can work within the .com limits. But it might be easier not to.

Unless I’m wrong, you can’t search the forums unless you’re a member? I just signed up.

I am creating philosphical yet practical information on how to live an enlightened life. I plan to give away half of it and charge for the rest (downloadable pdfs, audio, whatever). The site will not have any of the “make a million dollars crap” that’s become out there so much.

I was looking for a FAQ on ecommerce-shopping carts but haven’t found anything yet…

It sounds like there IS some FAQ on ecommerce?

I really like this wordpress.com “management” of the blogs on the super available server system…heck I’d pay something a month for that. Normal webhosters strike me as putting you on a rinkydink server clogged with other websites unless you spend lots with them. I currently am using Godaddy but their techsupport isn’t tech savvy and while polite, just wants to end the call as fast as possible. I need geeky support who has done this stuff, not reading scripts.

So, unless I’m wrong, it looks like IF you want to sell anything, you have to put a link to another website that will sell your stuff? True?

Anybody help me out here? Recommend alternative hosters?

    thanks!

    Kerry

There is a paid way of having a ‘super’ wordpress.com blog, I think I heard 250$ per month, I cannot remember what it is called, they might allow a shopping cart of some type.
Obviously, I really do not know ….

No. You can sell some stuff on your blog, but it cannot be a blog that exists only to sell stuff. Staff makes that call.

It sounds to me like there will definitely be a problem with the Terms of Service if you plan to charge for half your content, but only staff can tell you for sure. You will need to contact them on Monday.

I can tell you with 100% sureness that you can’t have a shopping cart because of our restrictions here, not on policy but on software. You will not be able to have downloads that you charge for with the click of a button. So it really sounds like this is not where you want to be; you should look into independent hosting of a WordPress blog over at WordPress.org. They maintain a list of recommended hosts.
