Customising type size, widget size and uploading pictures

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am having great difficulty customising my blog. I have the custom upgrade, but cannot figure out how to change font size, other than the standard options. I don’t know CSS, and don’t have the time to learn HTML. I just want my blog to look how I want it to look.
    So:
    How do I change font size in a non-standard way?
    How do I change the size of widgets, which are displaying way too big?
    How can I control a line break in a headline, so that the second line starts with the word I want, rather than the line break presented automatically?
    Can I put widgets left and right, or am I restricted to the Theme layout?
    Can I bring in pictures? If so, what is the correct format – I tried to upload a jpeg and it kept coming up as “the wrong type of file”.
    I’ve been at this for many days now – starting back in December and I need to get this blog online.
    So, I hope you can help!
    Best wishes

  • Hi there,

    Well, that is not a small list. :)

    How do I change font size in a non-standard way?

    I can see that you have already set custom fonts and sizes (Appearance>Customize>Fonts) and beyond that, CSS is the only other way to control font sizes. What are you trying to change?

    How do I change the size of widgets, which are displaying way too big?

    I saw that you had set a pretty big size (10) for your headings in the custom fonts you chose. That has the effect of increasing the size of ALL of the headings on the site, including those above each widget.

    Add this code to your CSS tab in the customizer. Note that you can adjust that value (16px) to be whatever you like, so feel free to experiment.

    .wf-active h1 {
    font-size: 16px;
    }

    How can I control a line break in a headline, so that the second line starts with the word I want, rather than the line break presented automatically?

    There is no way to control line breaks in headings like you describe. This is because text renders differently on each visitors computer (or tablet, smartphone) based on the browser and OS they are using. Basically, there are so many combinations of software and screen size that it would not be possible to have the text break in the same way for every user to your site.

    Can I put widgets left and right, or am I restricted to the Theme layout?

    That depends on the theme you are using. Currently, your theme only supports a sidebar on the right, so that is the only place you can add them currently. There are other themes that have sidebars on the left, or even the ability to configure them in a number of ways.

    You can find more about searching and activating themes here: http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2014/01/11/video-tutorial-themes/

    Can I bring in pictures? If so, what is the correct format – I tried to upload a jpeg and it kept coming up as “the wrong type of file”

    If it is a jpg then there should be no problem. Any other information in that error message you are seeing? Are you unable to upload ANY images to your site, or just particular ones?

    One thing you may want to try, in case the file is corrupted somehow, is to save it again, using a different format (like PNG) and see if that will fix the issue.

    Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
