    I wanted to communicate with an employee of WordPress, not a public forum. As that does not appear to be an option with this user UNnfriendly site, here.

    I would appreciate directions on how to customize my blog which actually reflect the current set up. The directions on the site, including the screenshots, are not applicable when they start instructions halfway through. Parts are missing so I am expected to understand what was done in steps A through P since directions start with Q. For example, the support page for Categories Widget tells me what my final result should look like and how to organize categories but does not mention how to actually create a category.

    Perhaps it is actually incredibly easy once you figure out how it works. The problem is neither I, nor my 60+ yr old mother, want to play around for 3 days trying to figure things out. We would like accurate, helpful directions. An actual human to ask questions would also be nice.

  • Hi there. Have you taken the time to work through the tutorials yet? They cover everything from customising the appearance of your blog, to how to create posts, to tags and categories, and anything else you need to know to get started. Without learning those basics first WordPress.com can be pretty overwhelming, but once you’ve mastered those it becomes really simple.

    As you mention categories specifically, categories are created when you publish a post. You can create categories directly in the categories menu of the dashboard as well (https://with36500days.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category), but they won’t appear in the widget until they’ve been assigned to a post.
