Customize → Widgets hangs

I open the customize area and after 20 minutes it still displays a progress indicator.

  • Hello there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

Can you tell me what browser you’re using along with any browser extensions that may be in place.

If it helps, this can be shared via https://www.whatsmybrowser.org/

Can you confirm if clearing the browser cache solves the issue please? https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

    Many thanks.

  • Hi there – In Chrome, are you familiar with the “Developer Tools”?

What we will need your help with next is checking to see if there are any specific errors when loading the Customize tool.

When in Chrome, try the following please.

    1. Load your site’s admin area.

    2. In the Chrome menu, click on View, and then Developer > Developer Tools. This will open an area either on the right or at the bottom.

    3. Make sure the new area is focused on “Console” – example: https://d.pr/i/6x8zQ0

Leave this open for the next step.

    4. Navigate to the Customizer.

    5. Watch for any errors that are logged in the Console. Take a screenshot of any errors you see and share with us here please.

Bonus Step: repeat these steps in a Chrome Incognito Window and let us know if you see anything different in the Console.

Thanks so much for your patience and persistence. :)

    Hello deancroyal again,

Please note that I have provided the Customizer area logs as you instructed me, not Customize → Widgets. If you need Widgets, please let me know.

    Hi!

Yes, the error messages from “Customize → Widgets → click on a widget area” will also be helpful. Would you please share them as well? Thanks!

  • Hi there,

For the time being we have set your widgets back to the legacy widget manager system, and you should have full access to them in the standard interface now while our team takes a closer look.

    Thanks for your patience!

    Hello jerrysarcastic,

    Thank you.

Could you please make a copy of log pages from my site? I prefer to put them to private mode.

  • Yes you can remove those, thanks for sharing.

Out of curiosity, you seem to have a lot of HTML widgets on this site, have you had any issues with managing them in the past? We’re currently looking at the code to see if there are any conflicts with the new widget block manager, but there is a lot of code to go through as you can imagine.

If there are any widgets that have given you display trouble in the past we’re hopping you can point them out so we can focus our investigation on them first.

    Hello jerrysarcastic again,

    > have you had any issues with managing them in the past?

No. Neither with editing, nor with applying the result of editing, nor with performance.

But please keep in mind that out of dozens of my widgets, only 3 or 4 are visible on a particular web page.

I believe your new code changes the following:

    1. The “hidden” attribute does not work.

    2. Preview of each widget.

As I understand it, you are currently working on fixing the “hidden” attribute. I would recommend not to bother with my problems right now, but to focus on the “hidden” issue. There is a good chance that when you fix the “hidden” attribute, my problem will be fixed too.

If that doesn’t help, I would recommend introducing a “code editor” option for widgets just like in posts / pages.
