Customize Child Theme Help

Hello! I would like to set up my WP child theme. I researched tutorials online. I have the paid Genesis parent theme and the free sample child theme. I clicked ‘activate’ to the child theme. I do not think I clicked or modified the themes in any way.

I am trying to use the Child Theme configurator to help me get set up. When I select ‘Create a new child theme’ and ‘Select a parent theme’, I choose Genesis. When I hit ‘analyze’ I received this message:

The theme ‘Genesis’ generated unexpected PHP debug output.

The WordPress configuration file has been modified incorrectly. Please see this FAQ for more information.

    PLEASE NOTE:

The analyzer reveals errors that may otherwise go undetected. Unless this is a fatal error, WordPress may appear to work correctly; however, PHP will continue to log the error until it is resolved. Please contact the author of any theme or plugin mentioned above and cut/paste the error from the text area. Do not use a screen capture as it may cut off part of the error text. Additional information about the error may also be available in the CTC documentation.

I clicked the FAQ and received this:

However, I am hesitant to make any changes because I really have no clue what I am doing. I need a lot of assistance learning how to get my website up and running. I want to use a child theme to make my changes. I think what I am trying to do is to make a new child theme, where I can make my changes, so the original child theme is not modified.

    Please help!

    Hi ambermetz92,

rejoiceinthehome.com is a WordPress.org site hosted by Bluehost, rather than WordPress.com:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

We can only help with WordPress.com sites here so I recommend posting to the WordPress.org support forums for advice:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

This information about creating child themes may also be useful:

    Best of luck!
