No changes you try out aside from those such as Custom Background, Custom Header and Theme Options which are stated on the theme description pages for each theme will be visible to visitors unless you purchase an annually renewable custom design upgrade.
As you do not have a CSS upgrade you can skip using the theme customizer. All of the very same functions can be accessed from your dashboard.
Appearance > Header
Appearance > Background
Appearance > Theme Options (applicable only to some themes)
Settings > Reading (set a static front page)
Site Title and Tagline > Settings > GeneralIf you do you purchase an annually renewable custom design upgrade

These are 3 ways to change fonts on wordpress.com blogs.
(1) Changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the HTML editor.
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/formatting-text-pt-5/(2) Changing font colors in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page using the #4 icon (Select text color – change the text color) in Row 2 the Visual editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2
(3) Changing all font families, colors and sizes throughout the whole blog by purchasing an annually renewable Custom Design upgrade and using Typekit Fonts.

On the Write Post box, there are two tabs: Visual and Text. Click on Text to get the HTML editor.
Note that if you code the changes by hand, they stay, even when you change themes. We had one guy who had a light theme, and he hand-coded the text to black, then switched to a black theme and had to hand-edit every single post in his blog so the text wasn’t invisible.
