Customize Gallery
-
Hi,
I’ve set up individual galleries for the projects listed on my site..for example, you can view one such example on this page: http://annascherman.com/made-in-birmingham/
I have already customized the buttons somewhat for the slides, but I was wondering, is there anyway to create a sliding arrangement (similar to what I saw on this site: http://citizen-bridge.com/design-#/id/i10732535). I would prefer that viewers see a bit of the next slide to encourage them to click through the different images.
Does that make sense? I would be willing to scrap the buttons I currently have, of course. Also, I’m using the Blask theme.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi, we can’t do that with slideshows. With a gallery, when someone clicks on an image, the image carousel opens and then you would see a bit of the previous and next image. One thing I might suggest would be to darken your previous and next buttons on the slideshow so that they will be more noticeable. I see you have done that with an image, so it would require editing or making new images for those.
-
Hmm. I would really prefer not to have an image carousel…
One other thought, is there a way to do something like this: http://www.cathlynnewell.com/Curfew
(see how the images are displayed as previews below the main image).
Might there be a plugin of some sort that could help me achieve the “preview” effect that I am going for?

Might there be a plugin of some sort that could help me achieve the “preview” effect that I am going for?We can’t add our own plugins at WordPress.com. Plugins are for self-hosted WordPress.org installations.
There is no way to add this functionality with CSS. CSS is a styling document that the browsers use to position and style the elements of a web page. It cannot be used to add functionality.
-
Right. Are there any HTML modifications that could be made? Perhaps there is a way to add images of the other slides that act as individual buttons? I would like to try to research this, I’m just hoping someone with more experience could point me in the right direction (if it is at all possible)
-
At WordPress.com, we cannot edit the HTML. You could add the images within the body of the text, side-by-side and then link them to whatever you wished to link them to. That is the only option I can think of.
-
Ok. But by linking them, would it be possible for the link to open them in the slide show? Or just a link to another page…that’s really the question.
-

No, that’s not possible. You would have to link to a post, page, or external URL.
-
Hm, just throwing out an idea here.
If the purpose is to show that there are multiple images in the slideshow, but @annascherman doesn’t want a Gallery to open in the Photo Carousel, would it be possible to first disable the Photo Carousel in media settings and then insert a thumbnail grid Gallery below the slideshow and use the link=”none” parameter?
@annascherman – hi again, just want to say I love what you’ve done with your site.
-
@justjennifer – thank you! This is definitely going in the right direction. I made a test page to try out your idea: http://annascherman.com/test-page/
So now, it is back to the initial question, is there a way to link the images in the grid to the slideshow? Or the only way they can be linked is by the options given in the media gallery “edit” panel. It seems like there just as to be some code that could be inserted!
This is definitely the right direction though…I’m excited that the emphasis is about the photos, not the text (just because of how much space the photos now occupy on the page).
-
So now, it is back to the initial question, is there a way to link the images in the grid to the slideshow?
No, as I mentioned before. :) There is not a way to open the images from a grid directly in a slideshow.
-
Hi Anna, you’re very welcome, but as @kathrynwp said earlier, it would not be possible to link the photos in the static Gallery to the slideshow at the top of the page. The only real “advantage” to having the static Gallery is that it’s now clearer to your site visitor that there are more images in the slideshow.
One thing I might mention is that while the slideshow buttons really suit the minimalist feel you’ve created, I found them a bit difficult to see.
-
Ok. Back up plan…is there a way to highlight the image being shown on the grid below? I am guessing the answer is no, but I am desperate for someway to connect the two…
also, is there a what to make the tile grid images slightly smaller?

There is really no way I can think of to dynamically connect the behaviour or display of the slideshow with the image gallery below it. They are totally separate.
also, is there a what to make the tile grid images slightly smaller?
Using a browser inspector, you can see that each gallery element currently takes up an equal amount of the page width, namely 25%:
.gallery-columns-4 .gallery-item { max-width: 25%; }You can reduce that value with custom CSS by choosing a smaller number.
-
Ah, perfect. I probably should have been able to figure that one out. Thank you.
I do have one last idea at faking a connection between the tile grid and the featured slide image…I could make my own tile grid in photoshop as part of the actual slide (it would only look like the grid was a separate set of images when in fact it would all be one image). In order to achieve this, I would need more vertical space on the slide show…am I able to modify the slide show image directions this way?

Hi there! Your site is looking great! :)
Are you still wanting to try the photoshop idea? If so, do you mean you’d like to change the height of the slideshow, such as the one on this page http://annascherman.com/made-in-birmingham/?

Hi! Slideshows are set to fill up the content width, and adjust the height within a theme so it won’t jump around based on size differences in your images.
For adjusting height on slideshows, to avoid display issues, it tends to be best to set the width and size your images to fit how you’d like and allow the slideshow to adjust the height to best pair with the width/image size.
(You also may be able to adjust the padding/white space around the slideshow using CSS without any issues, if you need more room that way.)
Let me know if you need me to take a look once you’ve made some image adjustments or if you have any questions.
