Customizer and editor show different things?
-
Why does the page customizer and the editor show completely different things? I can’t edit my site the right way because they don’t look the same. Would appreciate some help with this :)

Hi there,
The Customizer is used to customize your theme. In other words, that’s where you change things like the color scheme of the entire site, create a site menu, add widgets in the footer, etc.
The Editor is where you modify the content of a specific page on the site. So that’s where you add content and control how it’s laid out, control page-specific settings like whether comments are enabled or sharing buttons appear on that page, etc. The editor also has some global settings – if you click the A icon at the top that will allow you to change the font for the entire site – but for the most part, changes you make there only affects the specific page.
My recommendation would be to start with the editor, and get your content added to the page first. Then go to the Customizer so the preview there will contain your content already. That just makes it much easier to further customize the theme.

The issue is that it seems that you can add a navigation menu in both the editor and the customizer, but you can not edit them in the same way? If I add a nav menu from the menu builder in the customizer, it does not show up at all in the editor, so I can’t actually edit it?

We are working on converting all themes on WordPress.com to be “full site editable” using blocks, so that is why we have a Menu Block at this time. More info here.
However, because we are not ready to launch this yet, your theme was not designed with the menu block in mind. In this case we recommend creating (and editing) your menu in the site customizer, rather than via the use of menu blocks.
Also, how can I make the sites logo be more to the left?
This theme does not come with the ability to reposition the logo via a customization setting, but it is possible to tweak the position of elements on your site by upgrading to our Premium plan.
Learn more about our WordPress.com Premium Plan here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
The Premium plan includes the ability to edit and override the default theme CSS, which is needed in this case to tweak the positioning of the logo. We do not expect you to be able to write your own CSS however, so for small changes like this we can help with the code you will need.
If you opt to upgrade please let us know!

Okay, I will test different themes and see what works. I am possibly upgrading, but I need to test everything out first and make sure it’s the best fit for what I need.
Also wondering about this: If I wanted an online store, in addition to this wordpress website, how could I go about it? Can I use a different online store provider and link to it in the navigation menu, or do I have to use the WordPress online shop solution? -
You can actually go either route, and it basically comes down to how integrated you want your ecommerce to be on your site. i.e. do you want them to shop directly on your site without leaving vs. sending them to another site to make a purchase.
For plenty of folks who are just starting out, it makes a lot of sense to add a link to your site menu (Call it “shop” or similar) and when clicked it will take site visitors to a commerce site on Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Big Commerce, etc. You can often style them to look similar to your site by including your logo and brand colors.
You can also set up a simple shop on your WordPress.com site without going as far as setting up a full ecommerce solution if you just need to sell a few products to get off the ground. To do that you can use the “Pay with Paypal” block to set up product listings. You can add several products in this way to create a shop page for example: https://wordpress.com/support/pay-with-paypal/
When you get to the point where you feel you need something more integated with your site, like a shopping cart management, a large catalog of products or products with a lot of options, shipping and tax calculations, stock level management, etc. When that day arrives it makes sense to upgrade to our Business Plan and add WooCommerce plugin to set up ecommerce functionality.
One thing worth noting: If you start with a lower plan, but decide a few months in that you want to move up to a higher plan you don’t have to pay full price, only pay the difference in cost between the two.
