Customizing Archives message

  I am trying to customize my Archive page so that users can see a short message from me, links to my blog’s “Greatest Hits,” and then browse by month/year and category. I was able to configure the page in my admin area so that the month/year and category sections appeared, but cannot seem to get my message and links to appear.

  Do any of you have any suggestions? PHP is really alien to me, and I’m just stabbing in the dark . Here’s the code as I have it now, if that helps:

  Is your blog here at wordpress.com, or are you self-hosted using the software from wordpress.org? Here at wordpress.com, we cannot edit the underlying theme html and php.

  If you are self-hosted, you need to be asking over at http://wordpress.org/support/
