Customizing footer

So I have just spent the better part of two hours trying to take the style from an existing site and work it into a wp.com site (free for the moment). I am forced to choose a theme so I chose one that was “minimal”. Surprisingly I was able to get the CSS overrides to get the page to look almost identical…except that I cannot customize the footer. I don’t mind all of the WP stuff…but I want to add things, i.e. privacy policy, etc.

Am I fubar’d because the theme I am using doesn’t have a “footer”? Or am I just missing something simple…

Also for what it is worth after my first CSS “save” I can no longer save the CSS section. So I have it as a separate txt file and I just copy and paste it into the editor every now and then after I make tweaks.

You clearly cannot customize the footer of a theme that does not have a footer. Why don’t you put them into a text widget or something?

You don’t seem to have the Custom Design upgrade on http://ddcwptest.wordpress.com, and Pilcrow does support footer widgets. Are you talking about a different site?

    1. Being new to WP.com the last thing anyone would check would be to see if there is a “footer”. This is such a standard thing that after I got the entire page converted (via CSS) it was frustrating to hit a wall.
    2. Being new I also was not aware about footer widgets. I will give them a go.
    3. Yes…that is the site. I will be killing it and setting up an actual account eventually. Basically I didn’t want to pay the $100 to practice setting up a site if I couldn’t achieve what I wanted and then just had to go with the .org custom version. They allow you to use the CSS Custom Design but it is only visible to you and not to the public…this allows me to see if I can convert “any” design to what is needed.

Let me ask this…is there a plain jane boilerplate theme I can use? Essentially no theme? I know most people who use WP have no idea what they are doing and thus would prefer the ease of use of a theme, but seeing as how “the Internet” is my day job I can “convert” anything with CSS. Essentially if I can get my setup to have no theme and just the stock layout (i.e. div’s, etc) I would be good to go.

Other than the fact that the footer would contain “Pilcrow” there would be nothing visible that would indicate that it is actually a Pilcrow theme…

    a) Many themes support footer widgets.
    b) You can use CSS editing to add info to the actual footer (i.e. the credits area).
    c) As raincoaster suggested, WP does offer a completely unstyled theme for experts who want to style everything from scratch. You can also do practically the same on any theme if you select to discard the original stylesheet of the theme.
But this is not the easy way: the easy way is to start off a theme that already looks close to what you want, retain its original stylesheet, and use the add-on mode. (And pardon me, that’s what you should do: if you don’t know how to customize the existing footer via CSS you don’t sound like a CSS expert at all.)
