Customizing Harmonic Theme

I am using the Front page template and trying to customize the theme for my purposes. I’ve managed to hide the title, news and widget sections and now would like the main page and a nice, easy to see gallery or portfolio of my images, all of which are approx 800×300 color jpgs.

I tried using a Gallery widget for the Front page, but the images were tiny, even when I chose Full Size. The fact that my images are not photos may be an issue. I’d just like to have an easily read image that rotates through my images.

Next, I tried creating a portfolio: I guess I don’t know the difference between the “automatically generated” Portfolio and one I create myself. The portfolio at http://lavishlovenotesforthesoul.wordpress.com/portfolio/ is a link via the featured image that takes you to http://lavishlovenotesforthesoul.wordpress.com/portfolio/soul-message-cards/, a portfolio I created using the Portfolio < Add New function. It looks just like a Page. I used “Add Media” and pulled in those images, then could format them the way you format images in Pages or Posts. I don’t see how this is automatically generated. One thing I would like to know how to do, for example, is to vary the sizes of the images and have them in a montage. (I’m sure there’s a word for that.) Here’s the link to the harmonic demo that uses this: https://harmonicdemo.wordpress.com/2011/07/07/winter-journal/

Next issue: When you go to customize the theme, it appears to me that if you choose not to use a background image, you are stuck with their background image, instead of, say, white space. Is there a way to have a black or white background instead of an image?

    Thanks for your help.

Have you searched through the other threads on this theme?

  • Hi Phyllis, glad you’re making progress with Harmonic!

I’ll answer your questions in a few batches.

Next issue: When you go to customize the theme, it appears to me that if you choose not to use a background image, you are stuck with their background image, instead of, say, white space. Is there a way to have a black or white background instead of an image?

You’re correct in your observation that this theme requires background images on the front page to function correctly – this is for technical reasons relating to the way the front page’s JavaScript works. A simple workaround if you’d like a solid colour background is to create a small graphic of a solid colour – it could be tiny, like 10 x 10px square. If you upload that and let it tile it’ll look just like a flat, solid colour.

  • If you’re trying to emulate the Harmonic demo site’s portfolio section, you do need to create a portfolio and add projects to it that each have a featured image.

Currently, you’ve only added one project to your portfolio section, and so that’s why you only see one item in the front page portfolio section. Once you add more projects with featured images they will also appear on the homepage’s portfolio section.

This post you’ve linked from the demo is just a regular post that displays a tiled gallery:
